Install Ubuntu Edgy. Dapper didn't support the gigabit nic. Edgy also had better support for the graphics card. -
Install ntp support from the Date / Time preferences -

Remove password for anonymous login. Leave password field in passwd blank. Add to /etc/pam.d/login:
session required pam_mkhomedir.so
And ditto to /etc/pam.d/gdm For nullok to work with gdm, I had to add the following to /etc/pam.d/common-auth:
auth [success=1 default=ignore] pam_listfile.so item=user sense=allow file=/etc/loginusers auth required pam_unix.so nullok_secure auth required pam_permit.so

Setup printing. After enabling "show shared printers", CUPS needed to be stopped and restarted. Maybe it was running with the wrong permissions? -
